Research highlights key trends for intelligent buildings

Key trends and opportunities in the intelligent buildings industry for 2013 and beyond have been identified by IMS Research.
The company has now released its white paper on annual intelligent building trends for the year ahead. Three key areas identified are:

· Cloud and Big Data: is this the perfect storm for building analytics?
· Small but Perfectly Formed: small intelligent buildings
· App Store for Building Automation: the industry focuses on user experience

IMS says that during 2012, despite the stagnating new construction market, increasing numbers of existing buildings upgraded their systems to reduce the energy they consumed. In addition, increasing numbers of existing buildings also gained energy certifications such as Energy Star or LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design).

The first trend identified involves cloud and big data meeting. The market for building analytics is still in the very early stages of development. However, the union of cloud computing and big data could rapidly accelerate the use of building analytics in 2013.

Secondly, focusing on small, intelligent buildings, IMS points out that historically, larger buildings have been the cornerstone of the intelligent building market but says that 2013 could mark the turning point for intelligent solutions in smaller buildings.

Finally, as the industry focuses more closely on the end user experience and make it a priority in 2013, an app store for building automation will be key.
