Built environment professionals from the newly launched social enterprise STEER recently gave a presentation on Interview Techniques and Mock Interviews to undergraduates at the Leeds Beckett University campus.
Built environment professionals from the newly launched social enterprise STEER recently gave a presentation on Interview Techniques and Mock Interviews to undergraduates at the Leeds Beckett University campus.
The event provided the students with industry specific advice and expertise that should give them a huge advantage when starting their career.
Attendees learnt how to write a standout CV and cover letter, practised their delivery in mock interviews and spoke to industry experts about what to expect when they go for an interview and the best ways that they can prepare.
The students also had the opportunity to network with industry professionals and ask questions about careers in the industry, the challenges that they face and the future of the built environment.
Industry professionals who attended and supported the event were: Simon Owen FIRP, (M&E recruiter and director, Calibre Search and chairman of CIBSE Yorkshire), Zara Metcalf (WiBSE), Lynn Lockhead (Aspire-igen), Vicky Holloway (NG Bailey), Lesley Oldroyd (NG Bailey) and Michelle Bainbridge (Mansfield Pollard).
STEER is a social enterprise which has been set up by four female built environment and engineering professionals with the aim of connecting the world of education to industry by guiding, mentoring and supporting undergraduates through the transition. Sharon Slinger a senior chartered quantity surveyor with Carillion plc is the chair of STEER and is supported by Joanna Robinson, managing director of Mansfield Pollard; Kayley Lockhead, a senior mechanical design engineer with NG Bailey and Josie Rothera, a chartered civil engineer working in academia. The STEER team draw from their extensive contacts within the industry encouraging support from industry professionals to mentor, guide and provide networking opportunities to students who really want to take control and drive their career forward.
