Ice-thermal storage technology, greener refrigerant solutions, York centrifugal chillers , air handling units, and Metasys building management systems have all been supplied by the HVAC solutions provider to reduce the energy footprint of the Olympic games.

At Beijing's national stadium (the 'Bird's Nest') Johnson Controls says it has cut the annual operation cost by more than 15%, by using its advanced York centrifugal chiller with R134A refrigerant. It uses advanced ice storage technology and low temperature ice water stored at night to provide cooling during the day, while reducing energy needs at night.

As well as installing 4 R134a YORK dual-duty brine centrifugal chillers and an ice thermal storage system, Johnson Controls installed a chiller plant automation system in the 'Bird's Nest'. The stadium has a floor area of 258,000 square meters, 91,000 seats and during the games, track, field events and football matches are being held in it.

Johnson Controls's York chillers and air handling units are not only installed at the 'Bird's Nest' but also at: 1) The National Indoor stadium (aka 'Turtle's back' hosting gymnastics and handball), 2)Beijing International Airport, 3)Shanghai Stadium (hosting football matches), 4)Qingdao Olympic Sailing Center, 5)Beijing University of Aeronautics & Astronautics Gymnasium (weight-lifting) 6)CCTV's new headquarters building (primary relay center for televising the Olympics) 7)Beijing Olympic tower (geophysical survey and remote sensing center). 8)Beijing Workers' Gymnasium (Olympics: boxing, Paralympics:judo matches for the blind).

Johnson Controls' Metasys building management system allows building operators access and control via the internet, PDA's and mobile devices anywhere in the world. Metasys integrates building systems such as lighting, access, and fire/safety systems to ensure minimum energy costs.

The building management system is installed at the 'Turtle's Back', CCTV HQ, Laoshan Velodrome (for cycling and fencing), Beijing Olympic Green Tennis Court, Peking University gymnasium (ping-pong), Beijing University of Technology gymnasium (badminton, rhythmic gynastics) Beijing Olympic Park Central Zone, Beijing Olympic Forest Park and the Tianjin Olympic Center Stadium (football, track, field events).

In the Tianjin Olympic Games organizing committee's building, Johnson Controls has installed 33 York fan coils and thermostats, 4 York air-cooled/ air-source heatpump systems.

'Now, we are playing a significant role in making this, the XXIXth Olympiad in Beijing, the first 'green' Olympics' said John Murphy, vice president & managing director, Johnson Controls Systems & Service Europe and Africa.

The commercial HVAC provider's global workload includes offering integrated facilities management which equates to it managing more than one billion square feet worldwide. Johnson Controls has integrated renewable technologies including biomass, solar and wind energy at Beijing.

A spokesman for Johnson Controls said 'Johnson Controls is doing more than creating innovative solutions to make buildings more functional, flexible and energy efficient. We are also setting environmental standards'.

He added 'Our European energy & environmental team can design, develop, install, implement and maintain solutions that guarantee energy supply and reductions in operating costs at the same time minimising environmental pollution'.
