Henderson Green, independent engineering consultants, have been brought on board by Merlin Real Estate to provide full sustainability advice and other services to ensure a new two-storey office development in Southampton meets the required 'very high' BREEAM rating.
Southampton based Henderson Green is an accredited professionals (AP) and assessor for BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method), the assessment tool designed to help both construction professionals and clients understand and mitigate the environmental impacts of the developments they design and build.
Henderson Green's role in the Merlin Quay project involves engineering services design, sustainability advice and BREEAM Office assessments at appropriate stages of the building's development to gain sufficient credits to achieve the 'very high' rating as required by the planning process for all new buildings.
To ensure the Merlin Quay development achieves a 15 per cent renewable energy contribution, also required by the planning process, Henderson Green, working closely with the architect LHC, undertook a Low and Zero Carbon Feasibility study for the project.
The company is also providing daylighting calculations, lift transport analysis and a 'dynamic thermal model'.
The new Merlin Quay development, which is on the former Vestas factory site, is currently in the early design stages and the BREEAM pre-assessment is done, the results of which indicate how the BREEAM 'very high' rating will be achieved.
