Giacomini launches hydrogen powered boiler

Giacomini (UK) has developed a new hydrogen burner and is looking for a high-tech, new build home with high insulation values, in which to carry out its first UK installation of the system.
Giacomini launches hydrogen powered boiler
The fully EC approved design is already operating the central heating at a hotel in Italy.

Giacomini UK's technical director, Alan Sanders, claims: 'This is the world's first hydrogen burner and is similar in principle to a condensing boiler but by mixing hydrogen and air together it produces steam which, as it condenses, generates heat.'

The burner operates with adapted hydrogen fuel cells and Giacomini engineers have converted them to produce the energy to provide central heating. Any spare hydrogen created can be stored in bottles to be used later.

Mr Sanders says: 'Operating costs are virtually zero. The installation cost would be in the region of £15k so the payback from the fuel cost savings alone would be very fast. It is far more fuel-efficient than ground-source heat pumps. With energy costs spiralling it is the future for domestic central heating in appropriate buildings.'

The HydroGem is an interesting concept. The article does not provide any details of efficiency, ie kWh of heat produced for each kWh of electricity used to split the Hydrogen and Oxygen in the first place. I could see an application where you might produce large quatities of hydrogen in the summer to use for heating through the winter, but I believe hydrogen is quite bulky to store.
