Final speaker confirmed for BSRIA Briefing

BSRIA has confirmed Will Squires, digital lead for cities and development and aviation in SNC-Lavalin’s Atkins business, as the final speaker at its flagship event, the annual Briefing and lunch.

Tracey Tilbry, networks and events manager at BSRIA.

The event will look at the issue of Disruption in Construction – driving technologies and processes for the future, and will be held at the Brewery in London, on Friday November 16 2018. The main supporter is Trend.

Mr Squires will present on ‘how Blockchain may change the format of contracts’.

An unusual combination of data scientist, engineer, planner and strategist, Mr Squires has examined how technology will drive and change how we deliver construction and infrastructure projects. As an expert on smart cities, data, BIM, digital engineering and the impact of emerging technology on construction and the built environment, his research focuses around real-time city data, the challenges of long-term urban development and understanding spatial and temporal effects of design.

Based on the Bitcoin protocol, the Blockchain database is shared by all nodes sharing a system. On joining the network, each connected computer receives a copy of the Blockchain, which has records and stands as proof of every transaction ever executed. As such, it can assist the construction industry with accurate data necessary for its procurement contracts.

The guest speaker is Andrew Strauss OBE, and the chair is Oliver Zimmermann, chief executive of Condair Group AG. Based in Switzerland, Mr Zimmermann has been in post since 2012. Condair is an integrated, global market leader in humidification and evaporate cooling and its vision is to deliver productivity, sustainability and health through air and water to achieve extraordinary goals for a successful future.

Further speakers are as follows:

  • Susan Hone-Brookes, chief engineer for construction, infrastructure and energy at the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC).
  • Adrian Malone, head of digital project delivery and BIM transport and infrastructure, WSP.
  • Will Squires, Atkins Global.
  • Michael Potter, managing director and founder, DriveElectric.
  • Philip Guthrie, collaboration hub project officer, London Waste & Recycling Board (LWARB).

Tracey Tilbry, networks and events manager at BSRIA, said: “BSRIA is delighted that Will is joining the line-up of this first-rate suite of speakers to complete the set at its flagship and foremost event in the industry calendar. Attendance at the Briefing is a no-brainer with all the cutting-edge thinking and nuggets from industry thought leaders.

“The agenda will cover changes in technologies and processes and what that might mean for the procurement of contracts, building services and manufacturing going forward, taking into consideration bitcoin, the circular economy and innovation in manufacturing.

“We live in a world where new inventions, processes and ideas can be a real game changer and disrupt the way do things. The internet, mobile phones and the electric car are just a few we have seen over the last few decades.

“This year’s Briefing will look at the technologies and processes we might expect to see in the future and the implications that these innovations may have for building services both in the commercial and residential sector.”

The Briefing will be held at The Brewery, 52 Chiswell Street, London, EC1Y 4SD. The event starts at 9:00 am. Lunch is at 13:00, and the event will close at 15.30.
