Grimsby company Helius Energy can produce energy from whisky distillery waste- a feat that has won it 'Best Environmental Initiative Award' at the 2008 Scottish Green Energy Awards.
Helius received the environmental award for its work at the Rothes whisky distilleries in Moray, where the firm has used the dregs and pot ale from the distilling process to generate a potential 7.2MW of electricity- the equivalent of powering 9,000 homes- most of which would be exported to the national grid.

'The partnership between Helius Energy and Rothes Distillers has delivered a truly exciting environmental initiative,’ said BRE Scotland director, Rufus Logan , 'turning the by-product of our national drink into natural energy – energy to power the business by creating heat and electricity'.
