Copper thefts see sales soar at Durapipe

Durapipe has reported an increase in sales of 25 per cent due to widespread thefts of copper pipework across the UK.
Sales of plastic pipes, fittings and valves have risen in the last 12 months in response to the recent price hikes of copper piping.

The cost of copper has risen by up to 27 per cent for smaller sized copper tube, and as much as 38 per cent for larger sizes and the scrap metal value has also risen considerably leading to a copper thefts across the UK, and even a police task force launched in February to tackle the growing problem.

The considerable costs incurred due to copper thefts has put contractors under pressure, as they look to fulfil price promises whilst still making a profit, forcing them to look for alternative cost effective pipework. The price of plastic systems has remained stable throughout this period and is less likely to fluctuate, therefore giving contractors confidence when pricing medium to long-term projects. Durapipe has seen a growth in the level of interest in its plastic systems.

Commenting on the recent success of sales marketing manager Mitchell Holmes said: 'Copper thefts are a major issue for the UK construction industry and simply by specifiying an alternative material, this threat is completely eradicated. Over the last 12 months we have seen an unprecedented number of contractors convert from metal to plastic pipework systems. In fact, a significant number of our orders during this time period have been placed purely to avoid the risk of copper thefts, seeing sales of our Friatherm pipework system increase significantly.'

Neil Rickaby from Acorn Plumbing and Heating has experience of copper thefts on site. He added: 'During construction of The Avenue in Eaglescliffe, Durham, the site suffered from multiple thefts of copper for re-sale. As a result, we needed to look for alternative materials that would reduce the risk for us. With plastic being the obvious choice, we needed a cost effective product, which is exactly what Durapipe provided.'

This has been occurring a lot in the UK in the past few years, but I was shocked to hear that it has now spread to the USA...I agree with gena64, of course no one was seen or heard! They never are!

I read about this; this morning at http://www.homequotedirect.co.uk/home-insurance-blog/2011/04/copper-thefts-now-spread-across-to-the-usa/
