Balfour Beatty backs BIS report on apprenticeships

Balfour Beatty is the latest company to welcome the Apprenticeships - Fifth Report published by the Business, Innovation and Skills Committee (BIS), calling for apprenticeships in the UK to be focused on delivering quality rather than quantity.
The company employs more than 300 apprentices nationwide in a range of sectors and recognises the value of apprenticeships as the key to future workforce development.

Mike Peasland, Construction Services UK chief executive officer, said: 'This is a very important issue to a business like ours. Developing the skills of our workforce and attracting motivated, bright young people into our industry is essential to remaining competitive.'

He continued: 'We welcome the report and the key recommendations that are included - in particular the need to move away from the quantity driven approach of recent years and focus on a more qualitative view of ensuring apprentices are able to complete their full apprenticeship framework. In recent years we have generated a number of opportunities through our shared apprenticeship model, Balfour Beatty Apprenticeships, working closely with our supply chain partners to provide continuity of employment.'
