A guide to selecting variable-speed drives for use in buildings highlights the VSD features that provide effective building control and performance from the HVAC system.
In recent years VSDs have changed dramatically. They offer greater energy efficiency, leading to reduced energy bills, faster installation and commissioning times and lower noise levels. Today the effects of harmonics can be avoided with technology such as swinging chokes that help reduce harmonic levels by 25 per cent. VSDs also reduce maintenance routines thereby lowering overall service and running costs. Features such as BACnet interface and the integration of serial communications dedicated to HVAC protocols are offering greater adaptability and connectivity with automation building networks.
Features of particular benefit to the building services sector include the ability to pre-program drives with several HVAC-specific application macros, such as supply and return fans, cooling tower fans, booster pump sets and condensers. Connecting drives to a HVAC system is made easy by selecting pre-defined HVAC macros or by simply connecting to one of several built-in fieldbus options.
ABB says there is more to specifying VSDs than just the product and as much emphasis should be given to the levels of service and support that a manufacture or supplier offers. Therefore the product-related checklist is complemented by a service checklist which aims to help consultants ensure that VSDs chosen are backed by the right level of support.
