A1 agrees Battersea Power Station deal

A1 Flue Systems has signed a landmark agreement with Skanska, the main contractor for Phase 2 – the power station itself – at Battersea Power Station.

Initially worth £483,000, the deal is to provide bespoke commercial chimney systems for the redevelopment of the power station. A1 will start work on the first phase of activity this month with the installation of a temporary chimney system for the development’s energy centre.

The temporary flue system is part of the Phase 1 boiler plant that will be up and running ahead of the phased opening of Circus West – the first mixed-use neighbourhood at Battersea Power Station – from late 2016 onwards. It is a stop-gap measure, as the buildings that will eventually house the route of the permanent system are still under construction.

A1 Flue Systems has been in discussions with the Battersea Power Station Development Company for more than two years and was convinced that it would secure the Battersea Power Station project based on its recent portfolio of projects in the capital – including The Shard, ‘The Cheesegrater’ (The Leadenhall Building) and ‘The Walkie Talkie’ (20 Fenchurch Street).

A1 Flue Systems Director John Hamnett said: “We are delighted to have signed the agreement to provide flue and chimney systems for the redevelopment of the site of the world-famous Battersea Power Station.”

As well as installing the temporary system, Phase 1 activity will also include work to specify a permanent flue and chimney system, which will include constructing a 110m chimney system inside the rebuilt south-west chimney.

The total value of the Battersea Power Station project could be as much as £2m.
