A refurbishment project in Bury that saw exemplary teamwork between contractors Servistec and air conditioning supplier Powrmatic, has won the Best Small Commercial Building category in the LABC North West Building Excellence Awards 2014. 'The Barracks' project was also a finalist in the Best Change of Use of an Existing Building or Conversion category. The project will now go through to the National finals.
Formerly the Wellington Barracks, the site has experienced a number of changes of use over the years and most recently underwent major refurbishment under the ownership of Circle Leasing Ltd, preserving its heritage while creating state-of-the-art office accommodation.
One of the challenges faced by Servistec was the need to install air conditioning systems that were sympathetic to the architecture of the building. To that end, the company worked closely with Powrmatic to design the optimum solution.
The system, which provides both heating and cooling, uses two Midea VRF heat pump systems serving ceiling cassettes supplied by Powrmatic. In addition, Midea high wall inverter split systems have been installed in the communication rooms.
A second phase saw the conversion of the club house and ex-mess rooms to luxury offices and a café, again using Midea air conditioning products from Powrmatic.
