Rugby star to kick off BESA Conference

Former England and British Lions full back Tim Stimpson will deliver the first presentation at the BESA National Conference on November 4.

The retired rugby union star, who was also a stalwart of the all-conquering Leicester club that won the league four years in a row, is now heavily involved in the development of sustainable building systems and is co-founder of The Green Business Company.

He now works with local government, schools, clubs, businesses and social housing organisations to develop sustainable solutions designed to enhance community resilience, reduce costs, improve social wellness and reduce carbon expenditure.

Stimpson will share his journey from sportsman to green business champion and outline the many opportunities opening up for building services specialists that encouraged him to invest in the sector.

He will be joined on the main stage of the virtual conference by former fire safety inspector and innovation award winner Andy Slater, who is a member of the Institute of Fire Safety Managers and chief executive of Sol Safety Europe. His expertise in keeping companies safe is now widely sought in the wake of the Grenfell Tower disaster.

Slater will share his experiences and concerns over future standards of fire safety measures as the industry gears up to embrace the huge changes coming in the wake of the Hackitt Review. He will explain how contractors can meet their legislative responsibilities.

Building safety and the need for improved standards to safeguard the health and wellbeing of occupants will be a theme that runs through both days of the conference. The online event will include Dame Judith Hackitt as the headline speaker on the second day and a thorough analysis of the draft building safety legislation by CIBSE technical director Hywel Davies.

The Conference will also look at the many facets of the ‘green industrial revolution’ envisaged by the Prime Minister in the wake of the Covid-19 crisis and will update delegates on a wide range of new technical guidance and best practice.
