Industry unites at FETA’s 28th Annual Lunch

Over 600 manufacturers, suppliers, installers and contractors recently joined guests from government departments, other industry associations, institutes and members of the press at FETA’s celebrated Annual Lunch.

On Thursday April 11 guests congregated at The Brewery on London’s Chiswell Street where they were treated to a three course lunch, followed by entertaining and informative speeches by FETA chairman Nick Howlett and special guest speaker Justin Webb – BBC journalist and co-presenter of the Today programme on Radio 4.

Taking the opportunity to highlight some of the key challenges and opportunities that the industry is currently faced with, Mr Howlett began his speech by discussing regulatory alignment and the potential trials and tribulations associated with Ecodesign, EPBD, Energy Labelling, F-Gas and similar industry developments, with particular emphasis on how Brexit factors may play out in the future.

He followed by praising the BSI’s close relationship with European standards bodies: “We very much support the skilful and constructive way that the BSI has ensured it retains its very influential relationship with European standards bodies. Many FETA members, reflecting their respected standing within industry, are members of various standards committees and we will seek to further bolster our links with BSI in the future, providing them with access to the best people to represent our sector.”

Mr Howlett moved on to address the much anticipated review of Building Regulations, outlining FETA’s support for the industry-inclusive approach outlined in Dame Judith Hackitt’s post-Grenfell review. Acknowledging the reinvigorated campaign to address poor payment practices within the construction industry, Mr Howlett noted: “Momentum is beginning to emerge concerning retentions but we are adamant that topic needs legislation, as relying on voluntary codes of practice is farcical.”

Recognising the work being done on SAP and SBEM assessment procedures, as well as the positive changes brought about by the government’s Clean Growth Strategy, Mr Howlett finished the yearly address by drawing attention to the efforts of FETA’s A2L refrigerants working group and FETA’s sponsorship of an Arkwright Scholarship Award.

Following the chairman’s speech, Justin Webb entertained guests by recounting some memorable moments he shared with former US presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush before fielding questions from the audience.
