The family of a critically ill three-year-old, Georgiana Pooley, has a new heating system thanks to the generosity of businesses from across the North and the power of social media.
Georgiana is being treated for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia and is constantly at high risk from infection. Her dad Stuart and his family wanted to ensure a warm home this winter.
What started out as Stuart’s request for help to merchants Ian Pratt of MKM Anlaby, Keith Eames of MKM Hull and Stelrad Radiators, soon turned into help from Ideal Boilers, Geberit and even an installer’s Facebook group.
The team installed a complete heating system, fuelled by an Ideal Vogue combi boiler, in addition to 11 radiators and heated towel rail from Stelrad. The work was completed in one day, with more than a dozen installers from the Gas Chat Facebook group who came from as far afield as Liverpool and Nottingham to help.
Martin Train said: “Stuart contacted me after seeing my company on Checkatrade, and I wanted to help. Having met the Pooley family I posted Stuart’s email on Facebook. As a result lots of installers from the Gas Chat group offered help. Their response has been truly overwhelming.”
Leeds-based installer Allen Hart said: “Having lost my own daughter to cancer at the age of three I understand what Stuart’s family is going through. I’ve spent the last 10 years working with Candlelighters Children’s Charity, which is based in the same hospital where Georgiana is receiving treatment, so I knew I had to help.”
Ideal Boilers’ Chris Billington, who also helped on Saturday, said: “We were delighted to upgrade MKM’s generous donation to our top-rated boiler, so we can give this family additional support at this difficult time.”
Stuart Pooley said: “It is so amazing how many fantastic people are supporting us throughout these difficult times. We were really starting to worry coming into the winter months as Georgi has a very low immune system and is therefore at high risk of contracting cold and flu. We witnessed this first hand last year, when she ended up on the high dependency unit at Leeds General Infirmary for several weeks, where she was extremely poorly.
“Thank you is not enough to express our gratitude, but it comes in abundance from me, Beki (my wife), Taylor-Rose (big sister) and most of all my beautiful daughter Georgiana. Thank you to everybody involved in making our home safe and warm.”
