Honeywell has voiced its support of the push by the Heating & Hot Water Industry Council (HHIC) and The Association of Control Manufacturers (TACMA) to revive the Boiler Scrappage scheme in England and also include a mandate for heating controls to be fitted in homes.
Honeywell believes that bringing the Boiler Scrappage scheme back to homeowners in England will go a long way to help save energy and money, and suggest that including heating controls in the scheme will help to increase both carbon and cost savings even further.
Andy Mansfield, marketing communications manager at Honeywell, said: 'This is a tried and tested method that is proven to work and deliver the boost to the wider economy in terms of the jobs and spending which we need, as well as energy savings and cost savings for homeowners. Bringing the Boiler Scrappage scheme back is a brilliant incentive to help the country beat the energy squeeze and by making heating controls mandatory, it would increase its effectiveness.
'Controlling a home's heating saves £120 on energy bills per year for each household, on top of the estimated £290 savings per year which will be delivered from using an efficient boiler.'
These figures are based on a four bedroom, semi-detached house, using figures from TACMA and HHIC.
Mr Mansfield continued: 'Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland still run this scheme effectively and we see no reason why people in England should be missing out.'
The last time the Boiler Scrappage scheme was implemented in England, in only two months, 889,635 tonnes of CO
2 were saved, along with £34m worth of money on energy bills and a total of 111,618 boilers were scrapped. Also, 61 per cent of those who claimed a voucher for the scheme stated that they would not have replaced their old boiler if it hadn't been for the scheme and 77 per cent also fitted additional energy efficiency measures.
If this scheme were to be re-introduced, every boiler which was replaced would save 1.5 tonnes of CO
2, according to the HHIC.
Mr Mansfield added: 'It is reaching out to those homeowners who wouldn't normally think to replace their boiler or know that heating controls are one of the best ways to save on their energy bills which is the issue. Bringing back this scheme would give the industry a voice to incentivise these consumers to save energy and money.'
