A year 9 student was rewarded by Henderson Green for designing an eco-friendly building services layout for a classroom.

Alex Holt, from The Henry Cort Community College in Fareham, identified six different alternative energy sources in his green classroom. His grand design won a competition run for the Construction and Built Environment Skills Festival.

The vocational skills festival, now in its second year, was held in Southampton and attracted more than 40 exhibitors and several hundred young people from schools and colleges across the south.

Henderson Green, a building services engineering consultancy firm, supported the festival and congratulated Alex for his winning design. Staff at the firm believes running the competition was an ideal way to promote the construction industry.

Lisa Watts, CAD manager at the firm said 'There is a wealth of career opportunities within the construction sector and we felt it was important to not only attend the festival and speak to young people, but to generate greater interest in the industry and the environment by running a sustainability competition.'

Watts added 'It was a privilege to be part of the festival, which was a great success, and we hope our involvement sowed some positive seeds for any budding engineers in the audience'.
