The three-storey phase of a major new building at Southampton General Hospital featuring designs by building services consultancy Henderson Green has just been completed.

Henderson Green engineered the building services for the £8 million East Wing Annex project, part of a new six storey building which will become the part of the Southampton Children's hospital.

The building will comprise almost 10,000m2 of children's accommodation including a new main entrance, outpatients and radiology, emergency department and paediatric assessment unit, and oncology and transitional care wards. The infrastructure for a potential helipad and crew and fire team accommodation has been included.

The drive to reduce energy consumption and provide a sustainable building was supported by the appointment of Henderson Green as BREEAM assessors and advisors.

Energy saving initiatives include inverter drives on fans and pumps combined with two-port valve control and heat recovery on ventilation plant.

'The East Wing Annex is a high-tech building and we are delighted the first phase of this exciting and prestigious project has been such a success,' said Russell Pitman, Henderson Green's managing director.

'Saving energy while engineering the systems to allow for future expansion was a true challenge,' added Russ.

Henderson Green's healthcare experience allowed new technologies and principles to be integrated without compromising the system's security, maintenance or access.

'Henderson Green was a key member of the development team and invested consistent effort and considerable attention to detail in delivering the East Wing Annex, which is a complicated building. Delivering ahead of the original programme and to budget was no mean feat and the users are delighted with their new facilities,' said Keith Dowell, director of Estates and Capital Development at the Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust.
