ELCO dramatically boosts efficiency at historic York boarding school

A TRIGON® L PLUS 120kW gas boiler from ELCO has been installed in the drama block of St Peter’s School in York. Founded in 627AD, the school is the fourth oldest in the world – and now it is benefitting from a significant increase in energy efficiency and a 46% reduction in running costs.

Housed in the building’s cellar, the two previous boilers were both inefficient and coming to the end of their natural lifespan, so a modern and more sustainable upgrade was required. Yorkshire-based commercial heating contractors S&B Heating Ltd managed the project and, following a site visit, selected the TRIGON® L PLUS as the product most suited to the school’s requirements.

Commenting on the installation, Gary Sharp, Director at S&B Heating Ltd, said: “We chose the TRIGON® L PLUS because it is a floor standing unit, which perfectly suited the cellar location and enabled us to use the existing flue stack, while the addition of the system components within the backpack cut down on space required and installation time. As we were replacing two boilers, we wanted to maintain the redundancy; the fact the TRIGON® L PLUS comes with two independent stainless steel heat exchangers built-in meant we could fit the same redundancy in a smaller footprint.”

He continued: “We have worked with ELCO before, so were aware of the advantages of using their products. For this project, we fitted a backpack with plate heat exchanger to provide system separation, which allowed us to leave the system open vented.”

Since the project’s completion in August 2022, the school’s gas meter readings have revealed energy savings of over 46% during the winter months compared to the previous year, as well as an improvement in efficiency from 70% to 98.2%. This is in addition to the school’s staff and students benefitting from a reliable source of heating all year round.

Available in seven different models with outputs from 60-200kW, the TRIGON® L PLUS range offers a wealth of benefits, including: ultra-low NOx emissions, superb seasonal efficiencies and extremely flexible cascade arrangements. It is the most compact floor standing boiler available, as well as lightweight, thanks to its low water content.

These boilers also have the added benefit of dual stainless steel heat exchanger technology; these work independently from one another, so boast built-in redundancy in the event of any issues arising.

Impressive low NOx emissions are also achieved by utilising ELCO's unique HEX3 technology, which structures the heat exchanger into three zones. This is combined with an optimised combustion system to provide a reliable and robust lifetime performance – while also offering gross seasonal efficiencies up to 96.6%.

Set in 47 acres in the heart of York, St Peter’s School is one of the country’s leading schools and was named TES Independent School of the Year 2021. In addition to the drama block, students aged 2-18 have access to facilities including sports pitches, tennis courts, 25m swimming pool and a fully-equipped gym.
