Courses in sustainable practices at CAT.

Perfect rendering skills, learn how to install a wind turbine, and harvest rainwater this autumn at CAT, the Centre for Alternative Technology
The courses on offer are designed for professionals who would like to take their career to the next level. They teach skills needed in the transition to a more sustainable and prosperous society.

From re-skilling in ancient practices such as lime render and rainwater harvesting technologies, to contemporary systems in wind energy, the courses offer students a chance to specialize in their professional practice.

'CAT courses provided me with a most fascinating experience and insight into sustainable practices. I feel prepared to make changes in my personal and professional life and look forward to sharing my skills with my colleagues. The course has exceeded my expectations and I am excited about being part of the sustainable revolution,' said Rosie Jones, painter and decorator and CAT Course alumni.

Sustainable Water Management Solutions is accredited by BPEC and offers an opportunity to gain a qualification on completion of the course. The course looks at how to meet the requirements laid out in the Code for Sustainable Homes by giving a detailed overview of managing water sustainably in and around buildings.

From spring to sewer, students will study a range of alternatives to mains water as well as receiving technical training in the installation of water management systems.

The same week in September hosts the natural rendering and building limes course. Plasterer or not, it is easy to admire the skill and beauty in a good render. The course focuses on using clay and lime for external and internal finishes. There will be hands-on experience in mixing mortars, plasters and renders. Students are given an opportunity to build a lime kiln and can have a go at burning their own lime, continuing this ancient art in building aesthetics - the first ever lime kiln was discovered in 2450BC in Mesopotamia.

Domestic Wind Power Systems from October 1 is a three day intensive look at all things wind. From the booming industry to the construction of domestic turbines, sessions will also look at the national grid and feed-in tariffs in the context of wind energy. A highly specialist course open to those interested in buying and installing a wind turbine, as well as for those with a general interest in the subject.
