Cofely has been awarded a long term contract to operate and maintain the combined heat and power (CHP) energy centre at the Dow Corning facility in Barry, South Wales.
The energy centre comprises a gas and steam turbine CHP, multiple high pressure waste heat recovery boilers and low pressure boilers. It can generate 250 tonnes of steam per hour and up to 28MW of electricity. The heat and electrical efficiencies achieved qualify as 'good quality CHP' under the CHP Quality Assurance Programme.
Cofely will also be responsible for the operation and maintenance of water treatment systems which provide boiler feed water and treated water to the site.
Dow Corning has a strong and well defined sustainability strategy which includes minimising environmental impact through energy consumption and the CHP makes a key contribution to this strategy.
Energy development manager of Dow Corning, David Proctor, said: 'Reliable, low cost and low carbon sources of steam and electricity from the CHP plant are vital for the long term success of our Barry site. We look forward to working closely with Cofely to further optimise CHP operation and to help Dow Corning explore additional energy saving opportunities in other areas of our site'.
