Changes at the top at GSHPA

Bean Beanland has been elected chairman of the Ground Source Heat Pump Association (GSHPA) following a unanimous vote at the GSHPA’s council meeting on October 17. Chris Davidson, meanwhile, has been elected as the new vice-chairman.

Mr Beanland follows John Findlay, who stepped down as chairman following a period of two years in office. He will continue to take an active hole in the GSHPA council.

Mr Beanland has a degree in Physics from Imperial College and is an associate of the Royal College of Science. He holds the fundamental belief that well-designed ground source heat pumps are scientifically key to successful decarbonisation of heat, given that the climatic conditions in the UK are so favourable for GSHP technology. He has spent the last 10 years in the industry, initially as an installer, and most recently as a consultant and ground-source evangelist.

He commented: “Heat pump technology has a very significant role to play in the decarbonisation of heat in the UK as the country works to meet both its legal and moral obligations in the mitigation of global warming. The recent IPCC report demonstrates starkly how vital the displacement of fossil fuels is for space heating.

“In addition, heat pumps contribute massively to the reduction in levels of NOx, SOx and particulates at the point-of-use. In the urban environment especially, the contribution that heat pumps can make to improving public health is now being recognised by the GLA and others.

“Our Association will accelerate efforts to drive up both quality standards and rates of deployment, and will work tirelessly to promote the benefits that ground-source can bring to all environmental services, including cooling, in both the domestic residential and commercial sectors, and across both new build and retrofit built environments.”

Mr Davidson graduated in Theoretical Physics from Imperial College and spent several years within the motor industry before entering the renewable energy space in 2001. He has been involved in all aspects of the industry and all scales of GSHP installations, and is regarded as one of the pre-eminent designers of GSHP systems, operating globally via his consultancy GeniusEnergyLab. Mr Davidson has been instrumental in developing the UK policy environment to better serve the GSHP industry.

He said: “The GSHP industry in the UK now stands at a critical juncture, with nothing short of a radical overhaul of the marketplace coming over the coming months and years. I very much look forward to continuing to contribute to the exciting work of the Association to the benefit of our membership and the environment beyond.”
