BSS Industrial helps Sussex charity

BSS Industrial has supported a project to provide eco-friendly and energy efficient heating solutions to a charity in East Sussex.

The company’s Maidstone branch has a long-standing relationship with the charity whose site includes a school, community buildings and a social enterprise.

With a source of timber from its own forest, a wood-fired boiler brought a number of benefits for the charity. The BSS team supplied a range of Grundfos pumps, Victaulic products, Geberit Mepla fittings, a Flamco pressurisation unit and a range of steel pipe sizes for the project. The charity chose a Viessmann Mawera biomass boiler which is able to burn a wide range of biomass fuels with efficiencies of up to 92%.

Branch manager of BSS Industrial Maidstone, Ged Hunter, said: “Our client required a solution that was not only efficient but effective, meeting the demand of two accommodation blocks, as well as existing community facilities, which led to peak demands on the heating and hot water supply. The wood-fired Viessmann boiler is an incredibly efficient model, which enables them to even burn wet chips if needed.”

In addition to its own industrial scale shredding machine, a storage bunker for the chips, and a fuel delivery system which feeds the boiler on demand, the heating system includes a thermal storage tank and distribution pumps. The system connects to an 800m district heating network serving 16 buildings using an underground pre-insulated flow and return pipe system. This supplies heating and hot water via a heat exchanger in each building.
