The growth of BIM (Building Information Modelling) is becoming more important as we move towards the deadline which mandates its use on all government projects by the end of 2016. For this reason BIM will be a key focus at the ACR Show, which takes place from 16 to 18 February 2016 at the NEC in Birmingham.

BIM has the potential to improve design, construction and operation of commercial buildings. In simple terms, it is a process that involves creating and using an intelligent 3D model of a building.

By using BIM, building services engineers will have the ability to test various options at the design stage rather than waiting until construction is underway. It is also expected to allow project managers to plan ahead to prevent clashes on site and avoid the associated costs of these.

And once systems have been fully integrated into the building, it is believed BIM will help facilities management teams to evaluate energy efficiency and consider potential upgrades.

However, despite the fact that it has been a hot topic for the last two years and that it will affect almost everyone working within the built environment, how to comply with the Government’s BIM strategy will be a question on the minds of many in the building services sector.
