Ecovent Midi delivers reductions in both embodied and operational carbon, without compromising airflow performance or regulatory compliance.
Available in two sizes initially, Ecovent Midi has been engineered to reduce Embodied carbon through material selection and overall unit design. Using independently verified CIBSE TM65 methodology, it delivers up to 62% reduction in embodied carbon (size 4) and 54% reduction (size 5) compared to previous designs.
Designed and manufactured in Britain, Ecovent Midi is VES’s first heat recovery range to incorporate XCarb® steel. Produced using electric arc furnace technology (EAF), 100% recycled steel content and powered entirely by renewable energy, it significantly reduces the CO2 emissions associated with steel production.
Alongside material selection, Ecovent Midi’s compact unit design and optimised construction reduce overall material mass, cutting waste and lowering the carbon burden of manufacture, transport and installation.
A lower-carbon footprint has historically come with compromises in output or regulatory coverage. Ecovent Midi is designed specifically to avoid that trade-off. The unit maintains full compliance with Building Regulations, BB101 (ventilation, thermal comfort and indoor air quality) and BB93 (acoustic design of schools), making it suitable across commercial, educational, and public-sector projects.
Ecovent Midi incorporates a counterflow plate heat exchanger delivering up to 90% thermal efficiency. EC fans, low specific fan power and optimised BlueSense controls support demand-led ventilation and reduced energy consumption, lowering operational carbon.
“Too often sustainability is treated as a materials exercise alone,” said Jed Atack, Engineering Director at VES. “With Ecovent Midi, we redesigned the product from the ground up, optimising airflow, reducing weight and material use, improving manufacturing efficiency and integrating intelligent controls alongside low-carbon steel.
The result is a heat recovery unit designed to deliver genuine whole-life carbon reduction without compromising performance or reliability.”
Developed with installation constraints in mind, Ecovent Midi’s compact footprint makes it easier to position within restricted plantrooms, ceiling voids and retrofit environments where space is limited. As plant space continues to reduce across both new build and retrofit projects, EcoventMidi provides a practical solution where traditional units may not be viable.
Ecovent Midi reflects the continued evolution of the VES Ecovent range, responding to the practical constraints of modern building design. By combining reduced carbon, compact design and proven performance, it provides a clear solution for projects where sustainability and space are key drivers.
