The Hydrogen Strategy sets the foundation for how the UK government will work with industry to meet its ambition for 5GW of low carbon hydrogen production capacity by 2030 – which could replace natural gas in powering around three million UK homes each year as well as powering transport and businesses, particularly heavy industry.
A booming, UK-wide hydrogen economy could be worth £900 million and create over 9,000 high-quality jobs by 2030, potentially rising to 100,000 jobs and worth up to £13 billion by 2050.

'Our work with the Hy4Heat project and associated demonstration sites in the UK show technical feasibility of this solution. We believe the Government should act upon advice from the Climate Change Committee and other sources advocating a mandate that all boiler sales from 2025 should be hydrogen-ready in order to help pre-populate a swathe of the housing stock ready for a future conversion.
'Technology, energy efficiency and business models are all bit parts in the wider picture. Skilled installers and contractors will be utterly essential to success, so we are glad to see the announcement of a hydrogen sector development action plan in early 2022 setting out how the Government will support companies to secure supply chain opportunities, skills and jobs in hydrogen.
'Following the Hydrogen Strategy, we look forward to several important publications in the lead up to the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26), including consultations on the role for hydrogen-ready appliances, off gas grid heating measures and the UK Heat and Buildings Strategy.'
A Rinnai statement said it warmly applauded the UK Government’s decision to introduce hydrogen into its energy menu. The company has been working to adjust its product range in anticipation of this announcement.
It said UK decarbonisation and the reduction of fossil fuel usage were two of Rinnai’s priorities stated in the company’s goals. The company is pleased on two separate fronts: that their environmental concerns have been adopted by the UK government; and that all work undertaken to adapt Rinnai products has been rewarded.
Thanks to the UK government’s hydrogen strategy announcement, Rinnai products now function on two separate levels: they offer efficient performance and extended working lives and more importantly can be used as tools for decarbonisation.
