AquaCon Heat Exchange Modules from SAV Systems will supply hot water for heating and domestic services for an iconic development in the heart of the London Docklands.
Phase 1 of Indescon Court comprises some 350 apartments in five blocks, up to 16 storeys high -- the taller buildings with projecting upper levels to maximise the views. The blocks are grouped around Lighterman's Gardens, a new London square in the Isle of Dogs Regeneration Zone.
Developers Galliard Homes have also provided 1200 m2 of retail and commercial space with underground car parking.
Block C of the development provides social housing.
Dramatically improved energy efficiency
SAV's new Heat Exchange Modules (HEM's) bring a dramatically improved level of energy saving heat transfer efficiency to domestic hot water supplies. No separate storage cylinder, or calorifier is required, yet hot water is instantly available, thanks to the Module's ability to automatically divert energy to where it is most needed.
Because hot water is only generated when it is required there are no storage losses in the system. Diverting energy to hot water supply is much more efficient especially at times of peak demand - and also ensures a low return water temperature to the boiler so that condensing boilers are kept in maximum efficiency deep condensing mode for a much longer period.
AquaCon Indirect HEM's have been installed in apartments on the lower floors to level 8 of tower blocks B and E. Homes on the upper storeys of blocks B and E and on all floors of blocks A, B and D will be served by AquaCon Direct HEM units. The entire development is served by a central boiler plant
The AquaCon Direct design is suited to the greater static system pressures encountered on the upper floors of the tower blocks. Units feature a single plate-type heat exchanger, which can supply instantaneous hot water for the radiator circuits and domestic services.
Indirect AquaCon versions feature a second heat exchange module, which acts as an interface betweens the hot water main supply from the boiler and the circuit within the dwelling. In this way heat energy can be taken efficiently from the central boiler plant, while maintaining a 'sealed system' condition for the individual apartment.
Energy automatically diverted
When a variation in pressure is detected - as a result of an opening tap - the thermostatically controlled system ensures an instant supply of DHW. Energy is also automatically diverted via the heat exchanger from the heating circuits to the hot water supply - reverting back to the original setting when demand ceases. The system is designed to run smoothly - with no wild fluctuations in temperature or pressure on either heating or hot water circuits.
At Indescon Court all the AquaCon HEM's supplied by SAV incorporate built in Differential Pressure Controls (DPCV's). The DPCV maintains optimum pressure conditions in the hot water and heating circuits - maximizing the energy exchange at times of hot water demand.
Consultants for the project is Dixon De Boise of Tunbridge Wells and the SAV AquaCon units were installed by mechanical contractors Malden (Plumbing and Heating) Ltd
