Improving ventilation to help homes reach green targets

Forth Valley College’s Skills Transition Centre (STC) has unveiled its latest upgraded purpose-built learning space, designed to deliver domestic ventilation training and prepare the workforce for the transition to more energy-efficient homes.

The Domestic Ventilation Systems course, approved by the British Plumbing Employers Council (BPEC), will be delivered at the new facility. The course has been developed for experienced electricians, plumbers, ventilation installers and other construction professionals looking to improve their knowledge and understanding of domestic ventilation systems. It aligns with current UK building regulations and industry standards, including the Scottish Technical Handbook – Domestic (Section 3: Environment, clause 3.14 Ventilation) relating to ventilation requirements.

Participants gain hands-on experience alongside theoretical learning, covering areas such as airflow requirements, indoor air quality, system installation methods and best practice for commissioning ventilation systems. Successful completion provides learners with an industry-recognised BPEC competency qualification for Domestic Ventilation Installers.

The training combines practical demonstrations, installation techniques and testing procedures to ensure learners can confidently deliver high quality ventilation systems that meet regulatory standards.

Improving domestic ventilation is becoming increasingly important as homes become more airtight and energy efficient. Properly designed and installed ventilation systems help manage humidity, improve indoor air quality and support healthier living environments.

Forth Valley College’s head of commercial and training delivery zak Stark said: “Effective ventilation systems will be a key component of the future housing stock as homes become more energy efficient and airtight. Skilled professionals who understand how to design, install and commission these systems will be essential to maintaining healthy indoor environments.

“Through our Skills Transition Centre, we are helping to build that expertise and supporting workers to develop the specialist skills required by the construction and retrofit sectors.”

Part of the Falkirk and Grangemouth Growth Deal – a transformative collaboration between the UK and Scottish Governments, Falkirk Council and local partners, the Skills Transition Centre is designed to drive innovation and help reskill and upskill the workforce.

The £4 million centre supports Scotland’s Just Transition by enabling learners to access sustainable employment opportunities within lower carbon industries over the coming decade.

By delivering industry recognised qualifications in areas such as domestic ventilation, the centre is helping develop the skills needed to support modern building standards and improve the energy performance and indoor environments of homes across Scotland.
