Following the publication of this year’s A Level results on 18 August, BSRIA has underlined the importance of qualifications for ‘the industry workforce of tomorrow’.

The organisation says that skilled engineering graduates are essential to BSRIA and the construction sector’s demand for suitable skilled workers is paramount. It says that A Levels, TechBacc programmes and apprenticeships are all vital.

Chief executive of BSRIA, Julia Evans (pictured), said: “BSRIA is encouraged that there has been an increase in students taking maths over arts subjects. Learning the STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) subjects forms the building blocks of a career in engineering and construction. Lose this and you lose the very foundation of this discipline. Our economy relies on students progressing to engineering.”

She added: “It was especially encouraging to see applications to study chemical engineering at university have increased this year – applications to study this at the University of Bath shot up by 50 per cent this year – with computer science courses also high in demand.”
