BSE Angela Malynn named Graduate of the Year

Angela Malynn of Arup has been chosen as this year's CIBSE/ASHRAE Graduate of the Year.
Ms Malynn was selected from a shortlist of eight leading young building services engineers following an evening of presentations at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE). She has won a trip to Chicago where she will take part in January's ASHRAE Winter Meeting.

Her presentation topic was 'How can young engineers lead the profession to ensure we deliver a sustainable future?'

She achieved a distinction in her MSc in building services engineering at London South Bank University earlier this year and worked as a member of Arup's team on the King's Cross redevelopment programme. She also helps to promote engineering to young people, as a STEMNET and IMechE ambassador.

The award, which was sponsored by Baxi Commercial Division was presented by ASHRAE President Ron Jarnagin, who was part of the judging panel and later delivered the annual ASHRAE Presidential Lecture to the UK building services industry.

Cash bursaries from The Rumford Club were awarded to the second and third placed finalists Colin Lehane of the University of Northumbria and Mott Macdonald and another Arup engineer Mel Allwood of University College London.

This is the 16th year the award has been presented. It is organised by the CIBSE/ASHRAE Group and is designed to champion the achievement and potential of young building services engineers.

CIBSE President Andy Ford, who was also a judge, commented: 'The standard of the entrants was very high this year, leading to the longest shortlist for over a decade. This should give us all great optimism for the future and confidence in our ability to keep producing exciting, young engineering talent.'

The judging panel also included Colin Brown, engineering director of the IMechE; Rumford Club chairman Ted King; and the 2010 award winner Mick Gardner of Pick Everard. The judging was chaired by CIBSE/ASHRAE Group chairman Professor Tim Dwyer.
