Gas supplies and hot water have been switched off in 198 flats in Wimbledon following the failure of one boiler which resulted in many more being shut down.
Contractors inspecting a failed boiler on March 3 discovered significant deterioration of the communal flues in three blocks of flats and decided to cap off the gas supply to the heating and hot water to flats in May Court, Marsh Court and Hudson Court.

The residents of High Path estate are currently using temporary electric heating provided by the council.

Merton Council said it is working to install new hot water and heating systems in three of the main buildings with 'as much speed as possible following an unforeseen incident last week'.

A spokesman for the council said: 'Adverse weather conditions and strong winds on Wednesday, March 4, led to a problem with the heating and hot water supply. Investigations following the incident revealed substantial deterioration to each of the communal flues, rendering them unserviceable'.

The council will now install individual, new heating and hot water systems (including a boiler and radiators) for homes that were connected to the communal flue, without cost.

The council expects the work will take two and a half days per home. By taking on extra resources it says 30 homes per week will be up and running with the new installations.
