The awards were presented by Margaret Manly, chair of the Alfred Many Trust, and BESA president elect Malcolm Thomson at a ceremony held during the annual general meetings of the association's specialist groups at Trinity House in the City of London.
The Building Engineering Services Association (the BESA) has announced the winners of this year’s prestigious management training awards: Darren Walker of SES (Engineering Services) and Stephen Kelly of End Systems.
For the past 30 years, the Alfred Manly Management Award has helped young engineers to identify their key development needs and to achieve their full management potential. Starting as a pipefitting apprentice with HPI Building Services of Stoke-on-Trent, winner Darren Walker has, during his 11-year career to date, progressed from a Level 2 National Vocational Qualification to a Level 5 BTEC in construction and the built environment.
He is currently responsible within national contractor SES for the mechanical delivery of a large refurbishment contract at Leeds University, where he is also mentoring a student project engineer.
Winner of the Ann Noblett Professional Engineer of the Year Award - which recognises individuals who have completed an HNC/HND foundation degree or building services engineering course and are working towards the achievement of chartered engineer status - Stephen Kelly is a technical author with commissioning specialist End Systems of Leigh, Lancs, in which role he produces documentation for mechanical contracts throughout the UK.
He has achieved an Ordinary and Higher National Certificate in building services - the latter with distinction - from Liverpool College, and was this year's BESA North West Student Apprentice of the Year. He also received the Student Award 2015 from the Merseyside and North West region of the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE).
Highly commended for the Alfred Manly Award were: James Owen, a mechanical design engineer with J S Wright & Co of Birmingham, who is currently studying for a BEng in building services at the University of Coventry; and Rose Phillips, a junior mechanical engineer with Swansea-based RDM Electrical and Mechanical Services, who also has qualifications in plumbing and gas maintenance, and has run her own heating business.
In the Ann Noblett Award, highly commended status was conferred on Andrew Maxwell, a project manager with Airconaire of Rochester, Kent. An honours graduate in mechanical engineering, his current goal is membership of CIBSE.
