A sterile solution for Cfes

Specialist m&e contractor Cfes has completed the mid-project phase of modular installation on Yeovil District hospital’s £3.1m Sterile Services Department project.
The 15 individually designed and off-site fabricated modules were craned into position and made watertight early this month and the build will now move into the interior fit-out stage of the project ready for the installation of the specialist decontamination and sterilisation equipment which is core to the operation and function of the new centre.

Cfes will begin lifting nine pieces of specialist equipment mid month including 3 x 2-tonne sterilisers and 5 x 500kilo washers.

The specialist equipment for the new Sterile Services Department will be craned in over the existing build on the ground floor on to the new modular construction, on the fifth floor, which will reach final completion in August 2010.

John Davies, Cfes operations manager, explained how close liaison and communication with the client has ensured minimal impact during the plant phase of the build.

'In order to lift the 15 modular installations on to the existing building we had to close part of the hospital main visitors car park to accommodate the 350tonne crane and associated plant equipment.

'By undertaking the installation during the weekend, we have limited the disruption to staff, patients and visitors. The Cfes project team worked together with the YDH Trust to ensure we had clear communication in advance of the operations to all staff and members of the public who may have been affected by the temporary car park closure.

'I'm pleased to say disruption was minimal and through careful planning and design we ensured that the critical services, such as the A&E department situated directly under the modular build, were not affected by the latest phase of the project.'

The Yeovil District Hospital project is being managed by Cfes Medical Construction and aims to become the first Sterile Services Unit to achieve the BREEAM Excellent accreditation under the Bespoke Building category.

Cfes Medical Construction division recently completed the last of the six Nuffield Health standalone decontamination and sterilisation units.
This is the latest modular installation project for Cfes whose previous projects included the Cardinal House in Mayfair which won the Offsite Construction Award.
