Waterloo gains ISO 14001 certification

Waterloo Products has achieved ISO 14001 certification

The standard essentially maps out an environmental management system that helps businesses in any industry identify areas where costs savings can be achieved such as energy consumption, the usage of raw materials and waste disposal. In addition, it helps to identify and improve operational efficiencies.

Waterloo says that the whole certification process has been of immense value. The company has an environmental policy that provides a useful framework. All employees are aware of the environmental issues that affect the business and with their help, the firm has reduced waste production by adopting waste minimisation measures and implemented recycling and recovery practices where possible.

Waterloo has achieved a reduction of waste to landfill of 13% since 2012 and increased waste to recycling by 12%. The company has also reduced the risk of groundwater and surface water pollution by ensuring that all chemicals and waste products are effectively controlled and managed.

It regularly reviews machinery and processes and where possible implements new practices to further reduce energy consumption.

Recycling is a major part of the company’s strategy and it uses recycled packaging wherever possible. It has also undertaken a number of current projects which include; replacement of equipment with energy efficient equivalents, installation of energy efficient lighting, use of PIR where appropriate and the use of power monitors.

The company is focused on reducing carbon emissions further by encouraging local employment, 85% of current employees reside within local postcode areas.

Waterloo is already implementing an Environmental Management Programme for this year and says it expects to be able to make further reductions in energy savings so that it can increase profitability and pass on savings to its customers.
