New hospital data centre from Sudlow

Manchester and London-based communications infrastructure specialist Sudlows has secured the contract to design and install a new data centre for the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust.
The teaching trust is one of the top 20 in the country with more than 5,000 staff operating over three large hospital sites.

The trust required the new data centre for the current operations being used throughout the Royal Liverpool University Hospital site. In order to negate any business downtime on any servers or critical equipment, there was a requirement to install a fully redundant and resilient data centre, classified as Tier II standard, which guarantees a highly available infrastructure.

Other systems the client required were the installation of an air conditioning unit, a new fire suppression system, a BMS system, as well as water leakage detection to the under floor voids in the event of flooding from the CRAC units (Computer Room Air Conditioning). A new LV panel which connects onto a new standby generator and provides input /outputs from a new UPS system for critical system back up, was required also.

Housed away from the main hospital site due to space restrictions, Sudlows were able to design and install a mini pod that encompassed enough power and efficiency to maintain the trusts critical systems and operational infrastructure.

Peter Leadbetter, project engineering manager at Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University NHS Trust, said: 'Working within the operational constraints of available space at the hospital, Sudlows came up with a solution that not only managed to fulfil our technology and security considerations but also significantly improved the energy efficiency for a facility of this size.'
