Shepherd leads M&E work worth £13m

Building Services firm Shepherd Engineering Services (SES), has been appointed by BAM Construction as the main M&E contractor to work on the University of York’s campus extension.
The £13 million project sees SES start work later this summer on the first phase of the university's plan to extend its Heslington East campus.

The development work involves four new academic buildings with a total design & build cost of more than £66 million.

Minimising solar glare and reducing heat loss have been important provisos, so many open spaces within the new construction may be naturally ventilated. The University of York, along with its appointed teams are striving to achieve a BREEAM rating of Very Good.

The new development is expected to generated 10% of its energy requirements using renewable sources. For the most part, this will be provided by a centralised bio-mass boiler plant, serving a hot water district heating main and using heat exchangers in each building, to provide Low Temperature Hot Water heating (LTHW) and Domestic Hot Water (DHW).

Phase one of this 72 week project is due for completion in October 2010.
