Rockwool brings HVAC focus to Firex 2019

Insulation manufacturer Rockwool will return to Firex International 2019 on June 18-20 with three new rigs, demonstrating how its stone wool insulation can be deployed in ductwork and pipework applications to reduce the risk of fire.

“Preventing the passage of fire is a challenge in any building,” says Paul Barrett, head of product management at Rockwool. “Where HVAC services are in situ, the risk of fire spreading is heightened as metal pipes and ducts can act as heat conductors within the building, and between adjoining compartments where services penetrate walls and floors. Externally, the insulation used around rooftop HVAC plant equipment can also be vulnerable to fire spread. Rockwool will showcase how its non-combustible range of HVAC insulation solutions can effectively minimise these risks.”

On the stand, Rockwool will demonstrate its recently launched DuoDuct slab insulation for ductwork carrying warm air, chilled or dual-purpose duct systems as well as plant rooms and low-level plant work applications.

With fire resilient stone wool at its core, DuoDuct is designed for operating service temperatures of up to 230 degrees Celsius, but can withstand temperatures in excess of 1000 degrees Celsius. It has achieved a Reaction to Fire classification of A1 non-combustible as defined in BS EN 13501:1.

Visitors will also be able to take a closer look at some of the latest tested solutions incorporating the new SP Firestop Plus Slab, a one-piece solution for compartmentation, facilitating a close, non-combustible fit between substrates and masonry, or within curtain wall constructions. As a medium density, stone mineral wool insulation slab, it features foil facing to both sides as well as useful cutting lines to support quick and accurate installation. Importantly, it can achieve a fire resistance rating of up to 2 hours in voids of up to 600mm.

Rockwool will also showcase additional products from its FirePro range, including firestopping and fire resistance solutions to slow the spread of fire, protect escape routes and allow valuable time for safe evacuation and firefighting. The specialist FirePro range incorporates insulation products for structural protection, penetration seals, linear joints, cavity barriers, HVAC and smoke management systems.

Rockwool is a headline sponsor of the Tall Building Fire Safety Conference this year, taking place alongside Firex at the ExCeL London. This will be the sixth Tall Building Fire Safety Conference and the aim of the event is to consider how procedures and equipment used for tall building fire safety and firefighting should evolve. Tim Vincent, head of technical at Rockwool  will speak on fire safety in buildings over 18m in height during the show.

Following the focus on effective fire stopping, the Rockwool FirePro team will be carrying out a taster CPD as part of the ASFP Seminar at Firex. Delve deeper into ‘Compartmentation in Social Housing’ from 10.30 - 11:45am on day one.

On day two, the company will cover ‘PFP Considerations in refurbishment projects’ from 10:30 – 11:45am.
