Quarter of a million staff targeted for insulation

A quarter of a million employees will be targeted to join an insulation scheme run by Sainsbury's, via the internal communications channels of some of Britain's biggest bosses.
Sainsbury's Energy (a partnership between EDF and Sainsbury's) is to provide exclusive insulation offers to employees of the firms Accenture, Aviva and HSBC.

This will include incentives to encourage staff to take up offers such as free installed insulation for a number of employees.

Joan Ruddock, minister of state for energy and climate change said: 'The government's ambition is to see all lofts and cavity walls in the UK insulated by 2015. The 'Insulate Today' initiative will make a real contribution towards this target. As an extension of the government's Act on CO2 campaign, Accenture, Aviva, HSBC and Sainsbury's are helping their employees live more sustainable lives by offering exclusive insulation services in partnership with Sainsbury's Energy.'

It is great that an employer is taking this interest in promoting insulation.

I think insulation is the key to reducing carbon emission above renewables as it delivers an immediate result.

What I cannot get my head round is if it is the government's target to see all cavity walls insulated (i.e filling the whole cavity) why is it that building control needs you on a new build or extension to leave 50mm free space (75mm in exposed areas)? What about the solid wall construction? Do they not get a look in? At least an empty cavity has a better u value than a solid wall. There needs to be more joined up thinking on this topic.
