Newham raises the bar on gas safety

The London Borough of Newham has installed carbon monoxide (CO) detectors and smoke alarms in more than 15,000 properties.
The council upgraded the gas safety devices in its housing stock using alarms which are approved under the Firebuy framework agreement, a policy, is says, that has been endorsed by its winning the Outstanding Safety Achievement Award from the Gas Industry Safety Group (GISG) and the CORGI Gas Safety of the Year Initiative.

The council installed smoke alarms in its homes previously, but decided to embark on a programme of replacement rather than waiting until individual smoke alarms reached the end of their working lives and replacing single units.

The council worked with Carillion Planned Maintenance on the programme.
