Husband sets up charity for carbon monoxide awareness

A man who's wife died from accidental carbon monoxide poisoning has set up a charity in her name to raise awareness of gas leaks.
Richard Haines has set up the Katie Haines Memorial Trust charity, having amassed £50k of charitable donations since his wife's death in February 2010.

Katie Haines drowned in the bath after breathing in carbon monoxide from a leaking boiler that a gas engineer had certified as 'at risk' a few months prior but it had not been fixed, despite his concerns about ventilation. The couple had bought a carbon monoxide alarm but had not installed it.

The trust intends to promote awareness of the dangers of carbon monoxide to vulnerable groups such as students, holidaymakers and the elderly.

Mr Haines said the charity will be a 'legacy' for his wife.

The independent registered charity CO-Gas Safety expresses its deep sympathy at Richard's loss. We congratulate him on setting up this charity in memory of his wife. If only Government or industry had done what we asked in 1995, perhaps this death would not have occurred. We wanted and still want prime time TV warnings about carbon monoxide as the most basic of 20 other changes (all on our website).
We could do with more trustees so please contact us if you are interested in supporting us. I would put our website in this message but no doubt it wouldn't be published then but if you put CO-Gas Safety into a search engine you will find us. Hoping to hear from those interested in this.
