Hippo rubbishes industry's use of skips

Hippos are nothing to be scared of- in fact the building services industry can now embrace this new weapon in the war against waste.

Long gone could be the days of unwieldy, ugly-looking skips residing over construction activities now that an eco-bag known as the Hippobag is the new kid on the housing block.

Housing refurbishment specialist Lovell has been using the Hippobag in Sheffield where the company is working on a Decent Homes refurbishment scheme. The firm has swapped traditional skips for Hippobags - a flexible and environmentally-friendly bag for the management, removal and recycling or disposal of waste.

The company is installing new kitchens and bathrooms as part of Sheffield Homes' improvement plan for 52,000 properties.

Once filled, HIPPOWASTE collect, transport and dispose of the bags, and their contents, in an ethical manner recycling as much material as possible.

The Hippobag can be used where space is limited, because the bags occupy a much smaller space than skips and can be positioned in the grounds of each property, rather than on the road where valuable parking space is lost.

Chris Guirdham, Lovell's regional business systems manager said 'Another huge benefit of the HIPPOBAG is that the containers and the tailored collection service that is offered has helped reduce the number of fly-tipping incidents and tampering with waste.'

At four cubic yards, the Mightybag version of the flexible HIPPOBAG can hold up to 1.5 tonnes of bulky waste materials including old bathroom suites and kitchen units.

'The Mightybag as a waste solution has been extremely well received by the industry, not least because it has such a large capacity whilst still offering all the traditional benefits of the Hippobag's functionality.'
