The UK’s only state-funded Sikh secondary school is to be expanded with the help of Henderson Green which will conduct a sustainability assessment and design work for the building.
The Guru Nanak secondary school in Hayes, Middlesex is undergoing major expansion work and the engineering consultancy has been brought on board for its expertise in BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) and its M&E design experience at schools.

Henderson Green is a licensed BREEAM schools assessor, enabling it to gather information about the project against set criteria and incorporate a wide range of sustainable features into the final design, where possible.

The £15 million school project includes an £11 million new build, the major part of which will interface with four existing buildings to expand the school from four forms of entry to six, for years 7-11, and to increase the sixth form to 270 students.

Rob Pratt, Henderson Green’s director, will be undertaking the BREEAM assessment and said, “It is fantastic to be selected to work on this exciting, unique and prestigious project. We are looking forward to helping Guru Nanak Secondary School expand in the most sustainable way possible.”

Greg Hall, Guru Nanak secondary school’s deputy head and client project manager, said, “We are delighted to have appointed Henderson Green to work on the project, especially as the company places great importance on, and has extensive knowledge of sustainable design, something which is close to our heart as a school”.

The expansion is being designed and managed by architects Integrated Design Consultants.

Henderson Green, which has offices in both Southampton and Jersey, specialises in the design of engineering systems for complex buildings, both new build and refurbishments.

Henderson Green’s contract with the school follows on from four major education projects won by the firm earlier in the year.
