Mikrofill's refurbishment of Wexham Park Hospital's hot water system
Early in 2018, Ameresco Inc, a leading independent provider of comprehensive building services began a £7.5 million energy infrastructure and maintenance contract at Wexham Park Hospital. Awarded by Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust, Wexham Park is a 588 bed acute care hospital serving Slough and the surrounding area of Berkshire.
As well as replacing the existing steam boilers with 1.5MW of combined heat and power plant, the hospitals decentralised domestic hot water system included the installation of 38 x Extreme loading cylinders. A combination of 200, 300 and 500 litre cylinders each with a maximum instantaneous performance in excess of 2,000 l/hr at 60°C serves Wexham Parks diverse demands. The WRAS approved Extreme loading cylinder not only maximises LPHW efficiency by operating at Delta t 30°C, it’s structure also ensures 100% of its stored volume reaches its design temperature.
Supported by a 15-year operations and maintenance contract, Ameresco will deliver the hospital huge annual energy savings over the contract term. In addition, the project is expected to reduce carbon emissions by 1,621 tonnes of CO2 per annum.
Given the sensitive nature of the project it was imperative that the scheme was specifically designed to make sure there were no disruptions in the day-to-day delivery of patient services during the implementation process. Construction was completed within 12 months and the project became operational in December 2018.
