BSRIA launches guide to the selection of control valves

BSRIA’s has introduced the new Selection of Control Valves in Variable Flow Systems guide (BG 51/2014) to help designers avoid problems with the selection and application of control valves and will assist with the design of energy efficient variable flow systems.

BSRIA’s has introduced the new Selection of Control Valves in Variable Flow Systems guide (BG 51/2014) to help designers avoid problems with the selection and application of control valves and will assist with the design of energy efficient variable flow systems.

Control valve designs vary hugely and care should be taken to select the correct product for the correct applications. The guide explains how to correctly select and size conventional two, three and four port or pressure independent control valves for the direct and indirect control of terminal devices such as radiators, fan coil units, chilled beams, trench heaters, plate heat exchangers and calorifiers.

Proper sizing of control valves is vital to ensure comfort control by avoiding excessive temperature variations in the controlled media and to control system temperature differential in order to maximise energy efficiency.

The sections cover:

  • Matching control valve to terminal device
  • Achieving effective modulating control
  • Control valve sizing

This guide complements BSRIA’s previous guide (BTS 1/2012) Test Method for Pressure Independent Control Valves that offers standardised test methodology and presentation of results so that the performance of different manufacturers’ products can be compared in order to consider their suitability for any given application.

Selection of Control Valves in Variable Flow Systems explains how performance data can be used to assist the selection process and ensure equipment choices are appropriate.

Hard copies are priced at £20 to BSRIA members or £40 to non-members. PDFs are free to download for BSRIA members and priced at £40 to non-members.
