Battle of the building firms at Teambuild 2007

Eighteen companies battled to design a built environment for a new community to win Teambuild 2007
Teams of six, made up of architects, engineers, contractors, planners, surveyors and landscape architects competed to plan the development of housing, industrial premises and sports facilities on a highly-polluted site in one weekend.

The site, named The Avenue, located near Chesterfield was the focus of the Teambuild challenge on the weekend of November 17-18 and the winners were announced on December 19.

Team Olympus, with members from Buro Happold and EDAW, were the overall winners and received a £1,500 prize for the team's good co-ordination, presentation and leadership skills.

Team Olympus member Greg Collings said 'I think a lot of our team's success can be put down to having a very well-balanced team, both in terms of design skills and personalities.'

The winner of the contract strategy prize was BDP's Making Spaces team. BDP's Evan Shields from Making Spaces said: 'In one weekend you get to live the project from the masterplan to construction, which is an invaluable experience, even for our most seasoned team members.

The firms represented at Teambuild 2007 include Arup, Balfour Beatty, BDP, Buro Happold and Costain. Organisations supporting Teambuild 2007 include Chartered Institute of Building Services engineers, Construction Industry Council, Institute of Civil Engineers, the Worshipful Company of Chartered Architects, the Worshipful Company of Constructors, Institute of Structural Engineers, Institute of Mechanical Engineers, Royal Institute of British Architects and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.

Sponsored by ConstructionSkills, the team-working competition, is focused on project delivery and not exclusively on getting a design solution. It was originally known as the Build-a-Building competition, and has been held annually since 1992.
