Heat networks are one of the most effective methods for decarbonising heat in high density  housing, but it is essential that they operate at peak performance to live up to their potential to deliver lower carbon, lower cost heat.

Mr Allan will discuss proven strategies for increasing efficiency of communal heat schemes via the creation of smarter, connected homes. He will share examples of how Switch2 is linking its advanced Incontro smart metering systems with all components of the heat network – from heat interface units (HIUs) to the plant room, building energy management system and heating system. This is enabling real-time communication between all devices. 

Advanced smart metering informs performance improvement and maintenance strategies, leading to a slicker, more efficient and reliable service. By using digital automation systems in this way, landlords and heat suppliers can improve customer service, while maximising heat network uptime and minimising operating costs. 

Mr Allan said: “As well as making use of new digital technology to develop connected homes, it’s vital that heat scheme owners and asset managers get the basics right and learn from the mistakes of the past. Typically, poor performance is caused by oversizing of power plants and pipework, heat loss from inadequate insulation, inadequate maintenance strategies, and improper commissioning and balancing of heating systems within individual flats.”

The presentation will also examine how to use data to improve flow rates and return temperatures, which can cut heat losses, reduce overheating and reduce pumping costs. This can have a significant impact on cost, carbon performance, reliability and comfort levels.

Mr Allan will join housing asset specialists and leading experts from housing associations and local authorities to discuss the best strategies and technologies for ensuring that housing schemes meet the highest possible standards and are fit for the future.
