Prefabrication specialist Ormandy has won the contract to provide pre-packaged solutions to the Shard at London Bridge, which will be Western Europe's tallest building when it is completed in 2012.
Awarded by Mace, the contract will see Ormandy prefabricating and installing plate heat exchangers, pump and pressurisation packages within the 310m Shard, which has been designed by world famous architect Renzo Piano.
The 72-storey structure will comprise 54,488 sq m of office space, an exclusive collection of residential apartments - the highest in the UK; the 5-star Shangri-La Hotel with spa and pool and restaurants as well as viewing galleries offering unprecedented 360 º views of London.
Manufacturing has already started at Yorkshire-based Ormandy and their work will continue throughout 2010. Being developed by Sellar, the Shard will be a significant addition to London's skyline as Western Europe's tallest building.
'We are delighted to be working closely with Mace M&E on such an iconic project,' said Ormandy Managing Director Paul Cooper. 'Offsite pre-fabrication is increasingly being adopted for buildings of all shapes and sizes as specifiers recognise the advantages of such an approach.
'We are now delivering more packaged building services systems to help project teams reduce material wastage, speed up installation and improve quality control,' added Cooper. 'However, to do offsite well it has to be considered at an early stage by the professional design team and that is exactly what is happening on the Shard.'
