Legislation for Glanded Pumps and Glandless Circulators

New legislation is being introduced known as the ErP (Energy related Products) or Ecodesign directive. What this legislation means, and how it will affect both glanded pumps and glanded circulators is outlined below.

This new EU legislation will set strict new efficiency requirements for motors used in glanded pumps in the 0.75kW to 375kW power range. The ErP directive for motors will apply to motors installed in glanded pumps for heating, air conditioning and water supply pressure boosting. Additionally the ErP directive for glandless circulators will apply to all models up to 2.2kW and will require an Energy Efficient Index.

This legislation will have multiple steps. There are three steps for implementation in regards to glanded pumps and two for Glandless Circulators.

Glanded Pumps:
Step 1: The standard motor efficiency level of IE2 must be met for all motors manufactured after the 16th of June 2011. Step 2: In step 2, which will be applicable from 1st of January 2015, all motors with a rated output of 7.5kW to 375kW must have either, IE2 motors equipped with an inverter variable speed drive or an IE3 motor if no inverter drive is used. Step 3: From the 1st of January 2017, these requirements will apply for motors with a rated output of 0.75kW to 375kW.

Glandless Circulators:
The regulation for glandless circulators will come into force on 1st January 2013. The minimum efficiency requirements for glandless circulators is referred to as an Energy Efficiency Index or EEI. Step 1: 1st January 2013 is to be EEI 0.27, a level of efficiency that far exceeds the values of the current induction motor units. Step 2: 1st August 2015 an even lower EEI will apply.

Fact: The majority of pumps used throughout the EU are inefficient and waste energy. Pumps consume huge amounts of electricity in the EU and throughout the world, but this does present the possibility of enormous potential energy savings.
Solution: The solution is to fit pumps with high efficiency motors incorporating a superior variable speed drive.
Up to 60% of power consumption can be saved by installing pumps with more efficient motors and variable speed drives that automatically regulate the pump speed to the system hydraulic requirements.
