Scottish and Southern Energy is raising customer central heating service levels through the adoption of a new programme of ongoing system maintenance.
The energy company that supplies electricity and gas to more than nine million UK customers has introduced MagnaClean technology as part of a widespread initiative to improve central heating service and installation provision.
In Scotland, where MagnaClean has been adopted as standard installation practice since the beginning of the year, early indications suggest it is already making a difference to system performance.
MagnaClean Professional 22mm is being installed on standard boiler installations and offered on routine maintenance and servicing as a best practice approach to improved central heating performance.
According to manufacturer ADEY Professional Heating Solutions, MagnaClean could effectively double the life of a boiler, one of the most expensive appliances in the home, as well as maximising system performance, reducing heating bills and carbon emissions.
MagnaClean maintains and protects both new and existing central heating systems. The high efficiency, full-flow magnetic filter removes virtually 100% of the suspended black iron oxide that builds up in all central heating systems reducing efficiency and damaging the boiler, effectively shortening its operational life.
“From what we’ve been seeing, it’s working really well removing a lot of sludge out of the systems and this has been one of our biggest maintenance issues,” says Graham Wightman, Operations Manager for SSE’s Hydro Homes Services East in Scotland.
“Everything we’ve been hearing has been good and there’s been no negative feedback whatsoever. Although it’s still comparatively early days, we believe you now have to offer this level of technology to customers as standard service and maintenance practice.
“It fits perfectly with what we’re trying to do on the maintenance side here and I can only see us extending the programme in the future. The arguments for it are pretty comprehensive and customers are able to see the benefits themselves,” he adds.
ADEY’s National Accounts Director Phil Sadler has been supporting the programme with a series of educational presentations to SSE’s engineers nationwide and believes the true potential of the switch to MagnaClean has yet to be realised.
“Having looked at one or two different options, Scottish and Southern Energy adopted MagnaClean because of its sheer capacity to remove sludge and the tangible, long term, benefits,” he suggests.
“Those benefits will result in more effective central heating system operation and reduced energy bills and fewer maintenance call-outs in the future which will suit Scottish and Southern and their customers.”
