Dalkia delivers CHP cost and carbon benefits to retail
Dalkia is providing organisations in the retail sector, such as Tesco, with an environmental and cost effective solution to their energy needs. The installation of modular, onsite Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plants at Tesco stores throughout 2008 & 2009 has resulted in substantial carbon savings for the organisation. The scheme is delivered by Cogenco, Dalkia's specialist CHP subsidiary.
Traditionally associated with large-scale manufacturing and other heavy industrial applications, Dalkia is successfully delivering the benefits of CHP to the commercial sector. Retailers can improve the environmental impact of their energy requirements and do so in a cost efficient way.
Small-scale onsite CHP technology is a means for organisations to generate their own power alongside large volumes of heat in the form of hot water. In tri-generation plants cooling technology is also employed.
Typically, a saving of around £45,000 per year can be made on a site operating a 200kw CHP plant, resulting in a carbon saving of 325 tonnes.
As part of Tesco's plans to halve its carbon emissions from its buildings by 2020, Cogenco initially installed 20 CHP plants across a number of its stores, with more planned throughout 2009.
Damian Shevloff, Sales Director of Cogenco said: "The installation of small-scale CHP is ideal for retail sites such as Tesco's stores due to the high demand for both heat and power throughout the day. This provides a financially viable alternative to off-grid energy procurement, while also contributing to Tesco's green agenda too."
